Mike O’Malley and New Technology Shine at New York State Fair

Mike O’Malley really doesn’t know his mother-in-law’s birthday by heart. At least he says so with a smirk.

Spokesperson and actor Mike O'Malley joins YNN anchor Julie Chapman at The Great New York State Fair.

O’Malley, the spokesperson in the funny Time Warner Cable commercials, appeared at opening day of The Great New York State Fair on Aug. 26 near Syracuse. As a special guest of Time Warner Cable, he greeted hundreds of visitors at the Science and Industry Building. (Watch video or see photo gallery.)

The star of TV’s “Glee” and “Yes, Dear” and the big screen’s “Eat Pray Love” was at the fair with his wife, Jill, and her parents, who live in nearby Liverpool. O’Malley, with his mother-in-law only a few feet away, said his personal favorite commercial includes the house alarm blaring and his screaming that he can’t turn it off because he doesn’t know the password, which is his mother-in-law’s birthday.

O’Malley wasn’t the only star at the Time Warner Cable display. YNN’s Julie Chapman and New York Gov. David Patterson also spent time on Day 1 at the display, which is housed in the Science and Industry Building for the eighth year. The latest technology was also a big star.

“We’ve got Wideband, we’ve got Road Runner Mobile and there’s a new sports area,” said Peter Nields, a Marketing Specialist who is working his sixth fair for the company.

The Central New York Division is showing off all the latest gadgets at the fair. TWC Wideband features 50 Mbps download speeds.

NYS Fair TWC Wideband

TWC Wideband is a hit among customers at the Fair.

“Everything is a lot faster,” exclaimed Jacob Edwards, a customer from Vestal, N.Y., who is used to some interruptions when playing Facebook’s “Bejeweled Blitz” on his Road Runner Lite connection at home. He and his family were comparing the various Road Runner speed options at the fair.

Dana Buckingham, a direct sales representative, said that he had already secured two orders of Road Runner Extreme within the first two hours of the fair’s opening day. Extreme features 30 Mbps download speeds. “Customers come to us,” he said about the Fair specials, “and we have ridiculous offers. Good offers. No install fees.”

Road Runner Mobile is the new wireless, mobile Internet service that’s available in Central New York and Rochester areas. Other features at the Fair:

  • 3D TV demo with lounge chairs
  • Time Warner Cable Sports corner with a $100 gift card giveaway to the restaurant Tully’s and $15 opening night Syracuse University football game tickets
  • Three Web cams, including one focused on the ongoing sand sculpture in the Center of Progress Building (it’s a tribute to the Beatles)
  • 10 computers
  • 22 TV monitors
  • 1 big screen monitor
  • 16 hanging posters
  • 12 backlit posters in the walls
