South By Southwest Interactive is Spring Break for hipster nerds. It’s more flash drives than actual flashing. I’ll be down there representing Time Warner Cable from tomorrow, March 10th until the evening of March 17th.
I’m pretty overwhelmed by the offerings this year. It’s such an onslaught of stuff. Last year I learned a lot, made some new friends, and had a lot of fun. Danah Boyd‘s keynote blew my skull open in the daytime and the Gaslamp Killer made a pretty mess out of what was left at a show one night. I’ve applied stuff that I learned at SXSW Interactive at work every day since last year.
I can guarantee that I’ll be at this panel, though: Why Everything is Amazing But Nobody is Happy. If you’re going to be there too, do please come up and say hi or something. I’ll be the tall bald-headed white guy with glasses and black Converse on – Lord knows there’s a shortage of those at a tech conference. If you hear of great panels, parties, or more, feel free to find me through this blog or on Twitter: @jeffTWC.
For those of you who are going to be around during SXSW Music, I’d really like to urge you to check out a pretty cool event we’re doing with MTV at the MTV Garage on March 17th. Essentially, we’ll be giving folks the chance to write and record their own track in a state-of-the-art sound-proof recording studio called The TWC Recording Studio. We’ll have a Lyric Bar where people can develop words to their songs, but the part that I think is the coolest is the recording studio itself. As I understand it, we’ll have some software there that will actually reverse-karaoke your voice and either generate music to go along with it or match your voice to an accompanying instrument. You’ll be able to take a copy of your song home on a jump-drive, too.
For the record, I am not doing this, though I will be at the booth. I really, really suck at karaoke, and any music that is generated to match my voice would be some unholy combo of Japanese death-metal and Mannheim Steamroller Christmas records. It’s really best that I sit this one out, but please don’t let that stop you guys. There’s plenty of cool stuff that I just don’t do. Like skiing and dancing, for example.
A number of pretty cool bands will be playing at the MTV Garage from 12 – 6:30 PM that day, too. Here’s the schedule:
MTV Garage Main Stage Line-Up:
12:30pm CT: Theophilus London
1:30pm CT: Foster the People
2:30pm CT: Tinie Tempah
3:30pm CT: Friendly Fires
4:30pm CT: Kids of 88
5:30pm CT: Matt & Kim
MTV Garage Hype Stage Line-Up:
1:10pm CT: Hell & Lula
2:10pm CT: Locksley
3:10pm CT: Atlantic Line
4:10pm CT: Atlantic Connection
5:10pm CT: New Cassettes
Midi Mafia will be DJ between sets.
You can find all of this and more at the Red River Garage: 505 East 9th Street (Corner of 9th Street and Red River – across from Stubb’s)
Hope to see some of you down there.

Wish I could hear the “Why Everything is Amazing But Nobody is Happy” discussion. Sounds so interesting!
